Background

Ran distance in high school alongside Amy, now his wife. Four decades later he stepped back into the gym at 63 with a membership he had not been using, focused on longevity and bringing his visceral fat down.

Goal

Get the visceral fat down, feel lighter on stairs and getting out of chairs, and get back to running and dancing.

Training

Phase 1: Two machine sessions a week — chest press, leg press, pulldowns — picked for back and knee safety and programmed identically to Amy's so they could train side by side.

Phase 2: Same two days plus one light session, with dumbbell and squat variations added gradually as form held.

Phase 3: Slow tempo on every pressing movement, band and doorway upper-back stretches, incline sit-ups swapped for dead bugs, sessions shortened.

Phase 4: Three sessions a week rebuilt around supersets for time efficiency.

Nutrition

160 g of protein a day and alcohol to zero, aimed squarely at the visceral fat. Then the change that actually built the muscle: carbs added around training — a simple carb snack 30 minutes before lifting, a protein-rich meal or shake straight after. Daily MyFitnessPal, and he lifted his step floor from 10,000 to 12,000 and has been hitting 14–15,000.

"I'm obviously eating a lot better than I was before. Cut out the cheese and wine. And I'm surprised spinach has so much protein."
